san fran-based artist, tape_hiss releases his second ep on love notes and you can clearly hear both his sound and the label s maturing in tandem. moving on from the depth of his first record, love is a dog from hell, tape_hiss takes things into headier waters, going heavy on the acid and the rugged basslines on this 4 track ep. angelian war storm begins in exactly that fashion, with 303s squelching and bassbins rattling. this continues through the clear standout trackout, the vivian girls. the gears shift a bit on the b1 where sistrum boss, patrice scott is allowed to rework the vivian girls and does so in a warbly, dirty jazz fashion. tape_hiss then closes things out with the title track, realms of the unreal, which uses an appropriate sample annoucing, “this is me, yo. right here”, and it does very much sound to us like this budding artist is annoucing himself to the world in a most proper fashion. we can’t wait to hear what comes next from both artist and label.

unlucky 013? ha! this one’s a pearler. multi talented producer red rack’em climbs up the fertile n s y d e spirit tree for this glowing summer release in the form of the ‘nothing without you’ ep. a mutation from the same skunky-soul strain of n s y d e 005 by skymark / lady blacktronika. the title cut is a result of a red rack’em tour through the south pacific, connecting with inkswell and fam. what was meant to be a rack’em / inkswell track instead ended up with australian vocalist, now berlin diamond in the rough: misumami liberally sprinkling her magic throughout. with a proposed subject matter based around missing loved ones while apart, misumami weaves an enchanting story of longing, and matters of the heart, through signature sleek, clever, floor ready rack’em production. flip for ‘love beat’ and here we get red rack’em- the funky technician fanboy, dusty fingered native tongue devotee, and closet jazz dancer. the loose, bumping drum programming and sculpted, cubist jazz sampling (inna heavy mandalorian funk fashion) weld this nocturnal seduction dance together. this is a late night groover, an eyes closed on the dance floor vibration. both sides are modern, vital, considered house music, where the problems of the world dissolve in a heads down- vibes up situation. mastered by pole at scapemastering so you know it’s gonna bang...

based in montreal, ombossa appeared on dvs1 s mistress recordings in 2015. the young and talented french producer is set to have his first ep released in september on fracture, with a remix from silent season s asc. the blinding flare of 61 virgins is an elegant techno trip, an ode that goes deeper and deeper during 8 blissful minutes where you lose your own sense of time. on remix duty, asc skillfully makes it weirder, for a first ep that will please the more daring selectors out there.

ethimms second ep when in dark delivers the groups signature tension music with moods oscillating between suicidal heartbreak and conciliatory optimism. in the opening track why (a cover of the rhythm and sound classic), producer elisabeth thimm sets the stage for guest singer veronique to mourn love s loss, while brian gimmel s improvised piano licks hold strong agains the songs relentless bassline. the follow-up track late features lexx s dreamy lyrics gracing a subtle dance foor tune for spaced-out souls. the b side opens with ethimms love for dub. next is a freaked-out meditation on what has been and will be, while the fnal track done slowly creeps towards its peak, refecting on dark days where light may have not been much in sight, but going forward sees optimism, increased resolution, and drive.

dennis ayler was first introduced to us via 22a earlier this year. he now returns on his own imprint dennis ayler music. his debut ep no comment gives the listener a chance to step into dennis aylers world, where drum machines play cards with electric guitars and lead synths do private strips for kicks.

the formula was simple: marry bubblegum and soul to the absolute sincerity of an enthusiastic child, cross your fingers and pray for airplay. but while the youthful sums of that formula may have grown up and walked away from their illusions of stardom, their permanent records remain. by 1973, michael, tito, jermaine, marlon and jackie were as hip as kids could get—household names, with lunchboxes, coloring books, a saturday morning cartoon, and an alpha-bits cereal commercial pushing the j5 brand onto any kid with television reception. their impressive run of four consecutive #1 singles playing on both pop and r&b stations cemented their appeal to both whites and blacks, prompting mgm to launch the osmonds as the safer (read: white) alternative. and parents? well michael had that wrapped up with his impossible-not-to-love mini-james brown thing. even their song selection straddled both sides, with “zip a dee do dah” and “abc” for kids, and contemporary standards “standing in the shadows of love” and “my cherie amour” for the older crowd. this extreme marketing and merchandising juggernaut created the kid soul explosion. a decade removed from our acclaimed home schooled compilation comes a fresh batch of talent show titans. with enterprising parents, neighbors, and teachers turning play dates into recording dates, groups like magical connection, little man and the inquires, and five ounces of soul emulated the jacksons, who’d made grade-school stardom appear easy as abc. afterschool special: the 123s of kid soul contains 19 tiny tunes ranging from bilingual d.a.r.e. anthem, to james brown bio, to young love and life beyond the playground.

for this inaugural release the french label bfdm introduces two young promising producers aka the pilotwings. agorespace is an excursion, a trip where dark and killer drums meet with some soft melodies and primitive percussion. trance beats is a wonky house track made up of hip-hop/jungle breaks and synthetic animal sounds, a powerful combination of tribal rhythm and creepy synths. on the same side comes cavernes magiques, a modern electronic tune where raw 707 jams gives way to trippy dance pads, 90s influences. on the other side a strong techno track contrasted with bright synths called cours-la-ville, a dark and long exploration.

what ever not is the variegated music outlet from experienced dodi palese and dan mela, italian djs and producers supporting, selling, playing and releasing instrumental and dance music for two decades. what ever not tenth record, ‘galegos bar / the ritual’, sees a split release signed by dan mela and marco erroi. label co-founder dan mela inaugurates a new moniker ‘man dela’ for ‘the ritual’ - the original track gets remixed by anton zap, with whom mela already collaborated for a digital release on his own ethereal sound. flipping on the other side, marco erroi, head of common series ltd, continues his production career with ‘xxxv gold fingers’ for the ‘galegos bar’ side – one of the many different aliases he personifies - also contributing by realizing the artwork. ‘galegos bar / the ritual’ offers two sides of the same coin and we can have both things with one stroke. the common denominator is the ethnical ritual. it is fully expressed in the man dela side with deep and hypnotic ride out turned upside down by anton zap with a dynamic electronic waltz. the same item, however, is magically hidden in the xxxv gold fingers side, where we can find it in the form of drink beer and play cards just like in most terrible bars in south of italy.

trevino aka marcus intalex joins recent aus signings recloose and cassy with his casino ep. marcus intalex is widely known for making ground breaking drum and bass. in 2011 he started the trevino alias to feed his desire to get back to his roots and rekindle his 4 to the floor spirit. this new phase of his career propelled him to move to berlin where hes continued to develop a hugely impressive discography thats included releases on ben klocks klockworks and martyns 3024. casino brings together three deftly structured and dance floor focused tracks that blur the boundary between house and techno in true trevino fashion.

after spending the majority of 2009 in hollywood, chanes briefly returned home to finish up songs for what would become his 2010 release, an experimentation in instrumentation. the 15-track tape, presented by house shoes, exposed us all to the nomadic 21-year-old producer from canton, michigan. chanes would spend the next two years working between home and brooklyn, before relocating to arizona, where he would release his follow up project, renegade hands, (insect records 2013). presented again by shoes, hands solidified chanes as one of the most promising young producers in the country.
fast-forward to 2016, and at 27, this self-titled debut takes us circa 2007 - 2009 with the soul-chopping salad days of his mother s basement, through the alternative sampling williamsburg, brooklyn sessions of 2010. if the melancholy desert psychedelia of his isolated four years in perpetual southwestern summer gives us a glimpse into his growing electronic influences, then the angst of his winter homecomings are hiding under the aggressive parka weather beats that first caught the attention of detroit’s underground.
fittingly, chanes’ debut lp comes full circle, finishing the album back in the place it all started and releasing it with long-time supporter house shoes and street corner music.

belgian producer alix depauw is probably best known for his long-running association with shogun audio, where he started out making drum & bass and eventually moved towards halftime and other sounds inspired by soul and r&b. he’s also collaborated on experimental bass music with eprom under the name shades. the first ep on his new 1985 music imprint, elephant dreams, is a four-tracker from depauw himself and reportedly marks a return to his drum & bass roots. it also features two collaborations with skeptical.
